When changing heads, camshaft, intake manifold, etc. It is always a good idea to change the throttle body. Retaining a stock throttle body size while upgrading everything else creates a larger bottleneck at the throttle body. Also, the price of the throttle body is quite cheap when compared to heads, The stock Vortec iron head will not tolerate more than 0.440-inch lift. We measured our stock iron heads right out of the box and the retainer-to-seal clearance was only 0.470-inch. Subtract the standard 0.050-inch clearance, this leaves only enough room for a 0.420-inch lift cam. Run with the stock LM7 cam, this 5.3L combination produced 359 hp at 5,300 rpm and 384 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. After establishing our baseline, we proceeded to perform the cam swap. Off came the coil packs, valve covers and factory rocker arms. Before running the head test, it was necessary to upgrade both sets of heads with new valve springs. Neither the stock truck nor LS3 heads featured spring packages capable of working with the .624-lift cam. The 317 heads received a set of COMP 26918 beehive springs with matching retainers. Given the minimal difference in flow and lack of power production, the 241s don’t seem like much of an upgrade over the 706 heads. But on the upside, both respond equally well to porting. 4/19

But on the upside, both respond equally well to porting. 4/19 Run on the dyno first with stock heads, the 393 produced 387 hp at 5,000 rpm and 461 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm. The stock heads were really limiting this big stroker motor. After installation of the AFR 205s, peak power jumped to 555 hp at 6,600 rpm and 515 lb-ft at 4,900 rpm. A stock LS6 does have more power than a stock LS1. However, they can both make the same power with common upgrades. The aluminum blocks are not as strong as the iron block LQ4 and LQ9.
